The west of Malta is its countryside — terraced fields bounded by rubble walls, carob trees, chapels on the skyline and, at its edge, the Dingli Cliffs dropping to the sea. The villages of Dingli and Siġġiewi are the places to find space, land and quiet, within a short drive of Mdina and the centre of the island.
Dingli
Dingli is a small village near the cliffs, among the highest ground on Malta, with walks along the edge and wide views over the sea to the islet of Filfla. Homes include detached villas with gardens and pools, bungalows and village houses. We regularly offer villas in Dingli — see the listings below.
Siġġiewi
Siġġiewi is a larger village with a handsome historic core — a baroque parish church, a large square and streets of houses of character with timber balconies. Around it lie farmland, valleys and country houses.
Homes
| Type | Where |
|---|---|
| Detached villas with land | Around both villages |
| Farmhouses and country houses | The countryside |
| Houses of character | Siġġiewi’s and Dingli’s historic cores |
| Newer apartments and maisonettes | The village edges |
What to check
Rural property brings specific questions:
- Permits for every part of the house, pool, outbuildings and any change of use.
- Land outside the development zone is subject to tighter planning rules.
- Access — rights of way and road access.
- Water — reservoirs and wells are common; check condition and supply.
Use our due diligence checklist and read buying a house of character.
Everyday life
Life here needs a car. Mdina and Rabat are close for shops and services, and the harbour towns are a longer drive. The reward is space, silence and some of the finest sunsets on the island.
