Malta’s weather and seasons

Malta is one of the sunniest places in Europe, but summer heat and winter humidity shape how you live — and which home suits you.

Key facts

Swimming season
Roughly May to November
Home must-haves
Air conditioning, good insulation, dehumidifier

Summer (June – September)

Long, hot, dry and often humid, with temperatures regularly above 30°C in July and August. Life moves outdoors in the evening. Air conditioning is essential, and shade, terraces and sea breezes matter when choosing a home — a north-facing bedroom and a breezy seafront are worth a lot.

Autumn (October – November)

Still warm, with the sea at its warmest and the first storms. Many residents consider this the best time of year.

Winter (December – February)

Mild days, cool nights and most of the year’s rain. Older stone buildings can feel damp and cold indoors — look for good windows, insulation and dry rooms when viewing in winter.

Spring (March – May)

Green countryside, wild flowers and comfortable temperatures — ideal for house-hunting.

What it means for your home

  • Orientation — south-facing living rooms are warm in winter; protect bedrooms from the western sun in summer.
  • Air conditioning with heat pumps for heating and cooling.
  • Insulation and double glazing — they help in both seasons, and improve your EPC rating.
  • Solar panels — Malta’s sunshine makes photovoltaics and solar water heating very effective.
  • Outdoor space — a shaded terrace or a garden doubles your living space for much of the year.
