Mosta is one of Malta’s largest towns and its most central: from its square you can reach almost anywhere on the island in under half an hour. It is a practical, lived-in town rather than a resort, and it offers more space for the money than the coast.
The town
Life centres on the Rotunda, the Basilica of the Assumption, whose dome dominates the skyline. On 9 April 1942, during Mass, a German bomb pierced the dome and fell into the church without exploding — an event locals still call a miracle. Around the square are cafés, banks and shops; further out are large supermarkets, gyms, schools and clinics.
During the war Mosta’s position close to the RAF Ta’ Qali airfield made it a target; today Ta’ Qali is a national park and sports area just to the south.
Property in Mosta
- Apartments and penthouses in modern blocks, many with garages.
- Maisonettes and terraced houses, popular with families.
- Villas on the outskirts and towards the countryside.
- Houses of character in the older core around the square.
Prices are generally well below Sliema and St Julian’s, which is why many families choose Mosta. Browse property for sale in Mosta.
Getting around
Mosta sits on the main routes between the north and the harbour area, so it is well served by buses. Most residents drive; expect peak-hour traffic on the arterial roads.
Who it suits
Families who want space and good access to schools; commuters to Mriehel, Birkirkara and the central business areas; and buyers who want value within reach of everything. Nearby, Naxxar and the Three Villages offer quieter alternatives.
