Buildings and contents

  • Buildings insurance covers the structure of your home — walls, roof, permanent fixtures and fittings, and often outbuildings, boundary walls and pools — against risks such as fire and flood.
  • Contents insurance covers your belongings.

With a mortgage

Banks in Malta usually make buildings insurance a condition of the loan and may specify the sum insured. You can usually choose the insurer, provided the cover meets the bank’s requirements. Many owners keep the policy after the loan is repaid.

Apartments

The condominium may insure the common parts; your policy covers your unit. Check how the two fit together — see condominium and common parts.

Landlords

Letting your property? Use a landlord policy, which can cover liability and loss of rent. See letting your property.

Tips

  • Insure for rebuilding cost, not market value.
  • Read the exclusions — water damage, wear and tear.
  • Review cover after renovations.
