Buses

Malta Public Transport runs an island-wide bus network, with many routes meeting at the Valletta terminus. Residents travel free with a personalised Tallinja card; apply once you have your residence document.

Ferries

  • Sliema – Valletta — a few minutes across Marsamxett Harbour, from the Strand in Sliema.
  • Three Cities – Valletta — across the Grand Harbour.
  • Malta – Gozo — the car ferry between Ċirkewwa and Mġarr, and a fast passenger ferry from Valletta.

Taxis and ride-hailing

White taxis, and ride-hailing apps such as Bolt and Uber, operate across the island and are widely used.

Living without a car

Choose Sliema, St Julian’s, Gżira or Valletta if you want to walk to shops, restaurants and the seafront and use the ferry and buses. In villa areas such as Madliena or San Pawl tat-Targa, a car is essential. See driving in Malta and the best places to live.
