The main banks
Malta’s main retail banks include Bank of Valletta, HSBC Malta, APS Bank and BNF Bank. Several digital banks and EU e-money providers also operate, and many newcomers use one while their Maltese account is being opened.
What you will need
- Passport or EU identity card.
- Proof of address — a utility bill or bank statement from your current home, and your Maltese address once you have one.
- Source of funds and wealth — payslips, tax returns, company documents, or the sale of a property.
- Purpose of the account — buying property, salary, residence.
- Maltese ID or residence card, once issued.
- Bank reference — some banks ask for one from your current bank.
Tips to make it quicker
- Prepare documents in advance, translated into English if needed.
- Explain the purpose clearly — for example, “to pay for a property in Sliema and its running costs”.
- Use introductions — your agent, lawyer or employer can often help.
- Keep a non-Maltese account open in the meantime.
For buyers
The purchase funds normally go to the notary. If you need a mortgage, start with the bank early — see mortgages in Malta.
