The festa is the heart of Maltese village life. Each parish honours its patron saint with a week of celebration.

What happens

  • Decorations — streets hung with lights, banners and statues; balconies dressed for the feast.
  • Band marches — local band clubs parade through the streets.
  • Fireworks and petards — aerial displays and ground fireworks, a Maltese speciality.
  • The procession — the statue of the patron saint carried through the village.
  • Food stalls — nougat (qubbajt), snacks and drinks.

Famous festas

Lija is known for its spectacular Transfiguration fireworks on 6 August. Many towns — Żejtun, Mosta, Qormi, Żebbuġ and others — have festas with long traditions.

Living near a festa
