The Free Childcare Scheme

Malta’s Free Childcare Scheme covers children from three months to three years at registered childcare centres where:

  • both parents are employed or in education, or
  • a single parent is employed,

subject to the scheme’s rules. Free hours are linked to the parents’ working or study hours.

Applying

Typical documents include recent payslips and an employer’s declaration of working hours, or proof of course attendance. Apply through the official scheme channels and the childcare centre.

After age three

Children move on to kindergarten classes, followed by primary school. Many international schools have early-years sections — see international schools.

Private options

Nannies, private nurseries and after-school clubs are available, especially in the central and north-eastern towns.
